Areas of development:

The focus this year for your child is kindergarten readiness. All aspects of your child’s development continue to shape daily activities, from structured learning in academics and the arts to activities that help build confidence, self-esteem, social and physical skills. Our curriculum continues to focus on developing exceptional math and language skills. Children gain a greater understanding of sequencing and logical problem-solving, providing a strong foundation for advanced math skills. Our excellent language and literacy program promotes a  strong understanding of phonics, sentence structure and a heightened vocabulary. Continued development of computer skills enhances the educational and technological experience your child gains.

We continue to stimulate your child’s natural curiosity about the world through varying elements of science and social studies through theme-related elements. An appreciation of the arts and music enhances the whole experience at the  IQ International School Siem Reap and instills a love for learning as your child becomes ready to enter kindergarten. With ample time given to indoor and outdoor playtime, circle time and free play time your child will have also developed excellent skills in social interaction and physical skills and be ready to enter elementary school with poise and confidence.

Our Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-k) program at IQ International School prepares your child for reading, math, science and much more. Your child needs more than just child care in this critical age.

Kindergarten

(children from approximately 5 to 6 years of age)

The program runs for a full day. Unlike other schools, our Kindergarten is staffed by certified teachers who are qualified to teach up to Grade 6 so that the children are really being prepared for grade one. With a maximum class size of 15, the program consists of a daily program in General Studies, as well as intensive E.S.L.

Our goals are to increase socialization, develop motor skills and early skill and knowledge acquisition through thematic activities in language, science, and numeracy. Music, art and stories are part of a creative developmentally appropriate curriculum.  Although socialization outcomes and learning through play are still important, our children take on more responsibility and are expected to meet curricular outcomes in every subject.

Kindergarten is often a child’s first introduction to “formal education.” Therefore, they are the foundation upon which attitudes towards all subsequent education are built.

We believe that within the mind of every child lie the abilities of an Einstein, a Van Gogh, or a Shakespeare. Finding the keys to unleashing those abilities is one of our fundamental goals. It is thus imperative to provide a program which fosters a sense of enthusiasm towards learning, as well as one which facilitates the development of each individual to his/her fullest potential.

Because each child is unique, we recognize that they learn at their own pace and in their own way. Every child’s style of learning is identified through close observation, attention to the child’s needs, and most importantly, individual time with the teacher.

With supportive guidance, the children are encouraged to experiment, explore, create and problem solve as they play. All activities are designed to intrigue and excite the early learners and allow them to question, investigate and reach conclusions.

The early learning curriculum involves mathematics, reading, written and oral expression, and environmental studies. It also includes activities that develop social, physical, and creative skills.

The classroom environment at IQ International School Siem Reap is positive and stimulating, and whether the children are learning to count, read or paint a “masterpiece,” learning is fun! The children soon develop a sense of confidence in their abilities and are ready to take on new challenges. They learn to make decisions and to accept responsibilities.

If, during these most formative years, children build an eagerness to learn and grow in all developmental areas, then the groundwork is set. The children are successfully prepared to take the next step in their education.

Elementary

Grades 1 – 5 (children from 6 – 10 years of age)

As in Kindergarten, the experiences children have in the early primary years continue to mold their attitudes to learning and provide the basic skills and impetus for their continuing education.

The program in the primary grades combines a creative and stimulating, yet structured and disciplined environment, allowing students to grow and develop at their own pace. At IQ International School Siem Reap we strive to provide students with successful experiences which are intended to bolster their self-confidence and self-esteem, and to motivate them to achieve to the best of their abilities.

The curriculum closely follows the American Curriculum guidelines, and stresses the educational basics, building strong foundations in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Using a variety of resources and approaches, the curriculum also includes environmental studies, art, drama, music, and physical education.

In all subject areas there is a strong emphasis on creating practical and hands-on activities which enhance the theoretical aspects of the subject. Computers are used as an educational resource, and special events, field trips and extracurricular activities round out the program.

Ongoing assessments allow us to evaluate our teaching and to monitor the academic achievement of our students.. Formal written report cards are issued to parents with teachers providing anecdotal summaries of individual student achievement. Regular parent-teacher conferences are scheduled to allow for personal insights to be shared.

We strive to provide students with successful experiences which are intended to bolster their self confidence and self-esteem, and to motivate them to achieve to the best of their abilities.

Middle School

Grades 6 – 8

At IQ International School Siem Reap, we understand and support the development and growth that our students are experiencing physically, socially, emotionally and academically. The Middle School is a transition phase that follows a student’s journey from childhood towards life as a young adult.

This phase demands a special program  and our curriculum at this stage addresses students’ varied levels of emotional, physical, and intellectual development. Subjects are integrated to create rich learning experiences which will enable students to make meaningful links among their topics of study in the classroom and the “real world” beyond the school walls.

Grades 6, 7, and 8 make up our Middle School which is timetabled on a modified basis, Students receive instruction from subject specialists who are able to guide our students in the application of the skills and knowledge they acquired in the lower grades.

The core subjects include: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Computer Technology, Social and Environmental Studies, Physical Education, Music, Art and Drama. Co-curricular activities, community involvement, trips, visitors with expertise and out-of-school programming enrich our curriculum.

The Middle School elects its own Student Council which gives students opportunities for leadership and plans special co-curricular programs. Our Buddy Program enables a Grade 6 student to partner with a Kindergarten student for a year long classroom program of learning and engaging in activities together guided by their teachers.

All of our Middle School subjects are based on American curriculum guidelines so that our graduates are prepared for admission to a variety of international schools. As students at this stage often become deeply engaged with special interests and pursuits, they have new opportunities to investigate, use and share their growing skills and understandings. Students in the middle school are increasingly able to reflect on their capacities as learners.

A strong emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of personal strengths and areas for growth, on building confidence, and skills for leadership.

Our holistic approach to education enables students to explore many possible paths to success. This is a time of self-exploration, self-discovery, and a growing understanding of, “Who I am and who I can be.”

High School

Grades 9 – 12

At IQ International School Siem Reap, we understand and support the development and growth that our students are experiencing physically, socially, emotionally and academically.  This final stage in our program prepares our students for success in post secondary education and life as an adult.

The emphasis for learning and discovery is placed on self exploration and emphasizes personal responsibility, organization, and time management. These students are the leaders and role models within our school’s student body. With teacher support they organize large scale events for others students and the wider community.

Our high school program is a four year curriculum after students have successfully completed grade 8 or its equivalent. All students in their first two years of high school will study a full program of eight courses. Successful completion allows students to select a program of studies that meets their individual needs and prepares them for post secondary education. Students select an appropriate combination of academic courses to add to their knowledge and skills base, explore their interests and determine the type of education program they are best suited to undertake in their last two years of high school.

In the last two years of high school, students will focus more on their individual interests and identify and prepare for initial postsecondary goals. University and college preparation are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to meet the entrance requirements for specific university and college programs.

Our program aims at developing healthy, well balanced, and principled young adults. The rigorous curriculum offers opportunities to explore subjects in depth in preparation for success in universities and colleges. A strong emphasis is placed on critical thinking and develops the ability to appropriately and expertly question established norms and values while developing and questioning our own positions as well. Students are leaders in their own learning, exploring knowledge and reflecting on their context within a specific situation and within the world as a whole. This is a time of independence, leadership and service.

The IQ International School Siem Reap is proud to offer a  secondary school program that is based on the American curriculum. Our courses of study are developed from these policy documents because of the high expectations and learning outcomes which are recognized by most colleges and universities in English speaking countries.  Our school awards the IQ International School high school diploma. High standards are expected of graduating students. In addition, the secondary curriculum requires students to develop higher order thinking and learning skills.

Our program prepares them to make a living and a life for themselves and to make a difference to others.
